Mota-Engil Moçambique, Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, I. P. and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Mozambique have established a partnership agreement for the rehabilitation of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Balution. The purpose of this agreement is to regulate the participation of the signatories in the rehabilitation and restoration of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Bastion, on the Island of Mozambique.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Bastion is the oldest masonry construction on the entire African coast of the Indian Ocean, being the oldest European building standing today, based on a coral bench by the sea, with a budget of €576,000 for rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation project aims to strengthen the structure to be able to more safely withstand cyclones and other inclement weather that frequently hit Mozambique. It is said that the Island of Mozambique was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1991.
